The Angle Digit — Reading Straight, 45 and 90 Degrees from a Code

Three fittings that differ only in bend angle differ by exactly one digit in the part number, and it is the fourth one. Once you see it you never have to look up an elbow again — 87312 is straight, 87342 is 45 degrees and 87392 is 90 degrees, and the same rule runs through every family in the master list.

The diagram draws the same fitting in its three shapes. On the left the hose and the thread run in line, which is the straight version, ဒဲ့, and its code carries 1 as the fourth digit — 22612-08-08. In the middle the fitting turns through 45 degrees and the code becomes 22642-08-08. On the right it turns a full 90 degrees and the code becomes 22692-08-08. Nothing else in the code moves: the family 226, the series 2 and both dash sizes stay exactly the same.

What is the rule exactly?

In a five-digit prefix the fourth digit carries the angle: 1 means straight, ဒဲ့; 4 means 45 degrees; 9 means 90 degrees. Everything else in the prefix stays the same. So 87312, 87342 and 87392 are the same flange in three angles, and 30712, 30742 and 30792 are the same ကတော့ in three angles.

What does an H number at the end mean?

The drop height in millimetres on an angled fitting. Our list carries 87392-12H80 and 87392-12H100 — the same 90 degree flange in an 80 mm and a 100 mm height. Where a fitting has to clear something, that number is what you are choosing between, and two codes identical except for H80 and H100 are two different parts.

What does the MainSize column tell me?

The two dimensions that matter, separated by an x. On a flange it is hose bore and flange face diameter — 13xF30.2 is a 13 mm bore on a 30.2 mm flange, 19xF38.1, 25xF44.4, 32xF50.8, 38xF60.3 and 51x79.4F run up from there. On a ကတော့ it is bore and metric thread, as in 10xM18x1.5C. On a banjo it is bore and bolt diameter, as in 13x27Q.

What do the trailing letters H, C, A, D, Q, G, U and F mean?

They mark the end type. C is a cone seat, as in 6xM14x1.5C. A is the ဒဲ့ပြား flat type, as in 16xM30x2A. Q is a banjo, as in 6x8Q. F is a flange face. G is a BSP thread, as in G1/4. U is a UN or UNF thread, as in U9/16 ORFS or U7/16 D. H appears on the ထိုးတံ series. Two codes that differ only by this letter are different seals and do not interchange.

How should staff use this at the counter?

Read the code aloud in four parts: family, angle digit, sizes, then any trailing letter or height. "87392-12H100 — flange, ninety degree, three-quarter, hundred millimetre drop." If the customer says ninety and the code says 1, one of you is wrong and it takes two seconds to find out which.

How sure is the angle rule?

It was checked against every part number in two vendor lists, about six thousand codes, and no genuine exception was found. The handful that first looked like exceptions turned out to be prices caught by the search, such as 1.45 dollars, or thread sizes such as M45 in 30212-45-20, where the 45 is the thread and not an angle. Read the fourth digit of the prefix, never a 45 or 90 elsewhere in the line.
