A fitting part number such as 87691-16-12 looks like a stock code and is actually a description. The prefix is the shape and thread family, and the two numbers after it are the two ends. Once you can read one, you can read the whole wall.

The first is the fitting or flange end and the second is the hose end, both as dash sizes. From our own flange series: 87691-08-08 is 1/2 inch, DN12, dash 08. 87691-12-10 is 3/4 inch, DN16, dash 10. 87691-16-12 is 1 inch, DN20, dash 12. 87691-20-20 is 1-1/4 inch, DN32, dash 20. 87691-32-32 is 2 inch, DN50, dash 32.

What is DN and why does it appear as well?

DN is the metric nominal diameter — the European way of naming the same size that the inch fraction names. DN12 is 1/2 inch, DN16 is 5/8, DN20 is 3/4, DN25 is 1 inch, DN32 is 1-1/4, DN40 is 1-1/2 and DN50 is 2 inch. It appears alongside the dash because European machines and Chinese suppliers both use it, and a quotation may carry DN where the part number carries a dash.

Why is the fitting end sometimes bigger than the hose end?

Because a large port often feeds a smaller hose, and that is normal rather than a mistake. Our 87691-16-12 puts a 1 inch flange on a 3/4 inch hose, and 87691-24-20 puts a 1-1/2 inch flange on a 1-1/4 inch hose. When ordering, always give both numbers — quoting only the hose size leaves half the part undefined.

What do the letters at the end of a code mean?

They carry the variant. A trailing L with a number, as in 14212-08-08L78, is a length in millimetres. A trailing Y or T, as in 30111-12-00Y and 20111-14-03T, marks a version of the same fitting. A trailing D, as in 22611D-04-04, is the double hexagon version: the nut has two sets of spanner flats. Never drop a trailing letter when ordering — two codes that differ only by the last character are two different parts, and the plain and D versions of the same code both exist.

How do I read a ferrule code?

What is the safest way to order a fitting?

Give the full code exactly as written, including every dash and every trailing letter, and then say the sizes out loud as a check — "10211-14-04, that is dash 14 on dash 04". If you do not have a code, give both end types, both dash sizes and the shape, and bring the old fitting or a photograph of both ends.

The dash structure is consistent across the ranges — prefix then sizes — but the prefix itself means different things in different families. Our own records carry prefixes such as 10211, 10611, 14212, 20111, 20207, 20241, 26711, 30111 and 87691 across fittings, ferrules, banjos and flanges. Learn the ones your branch sells most rather than trying to memorise all of them.
