The listing shows only a code like 1J-16-16. What can I actually read from it?

The dashes give you size — divide by sixteen, so -16 is 1 inch and -04 is 1/4 inch, and two matching dashes mean both ends are the same size. Why do the product descriptions not say what the fitting is?

Do not rely on them. How do I identify the thread on an old fitting?

Measure the thread outside diameter with a caliper, then count the threads across one inch. Compare against the port you must fit. The hard pair is BSP against NPT at 1/2 and 3/4 inch — both are 14 threads per inch and the diameters differ by a fraction of a millimetre, so a gauge cannot separate them. How do I tell what kind of seal it uses?

Look at the face, not the thread. A 37 degree internal cone is JIC. A 60 degree cone is BSP or NPSM. A flat face with an O-ring groove is ORFS. A straight thread with an O-ring under a shoulder is ORB. A 24 degree cone with a metric thread is DIN. How do I know which hose it crimps onto?

The dash on the hose end is the hose bore, so a -08 fitting goes on 1/2 inch hose. You also have to match the hose construction — a one-wire R1, a two-wire R2 and a compact R16 do not all take the same ferrule even at the same bore. What is the fastest way to get the right part?

Bring the old fitting to the counter. Failing that, send us four photographs: the fitting beside a ruler, the thread end facing the camera, a close-up of the sealing face, and a caliper reading across the thread. Add the hose bore and what the line carries. Yes, and that is the most reliable route of all. Once a fitting has worked, write the full code including every dash in your service record — 1J-16-16, not "1 inch hose fitting". Next time the order takes one line and no measuring.
