Why do some part numbers have two dashes and some have three?

How do I measure a thread I cannot identify?

Three measurements settle almost every case. Measure the outside diameter of a male thread or the inside diameter of a female with a vernier caliper. Count threads per inch with a thread pitch gauge, or measure pitch in millimetres for metric. What if I only know the hose size?

That gives you the first dash but not the second. A fitting has a hose end and a thread end and they are sized separately — our assembly listings show 14-04 and 12-12 side by side for exactly this reason. Bring the old fitting or the port it screws into; the hose size alone will get you half the answer.

No, and that is a useful tell. A metric fitting is called out by its thread in millimetres, such as M18 by 1.5, and by the tube outside diameter, also in millimetres. If a part number carries dashes it is almost certainly an inch-standard fitting; if it carries an M and a decimal it is metric. That one observation sorts a mixed drawer quickly.
