A five-digit prefix carries three digits for the family, one for the bend angle and one for the series. Then two dash numbers: the first is the thread, the second is the hose. Getting that order the right way round is the whole skill — most wrong orders happen because somebody read the first dash as the hose size.

The diagram splits the code 22612-08-08 into its five parts. The first three digits 226 are the family, BSPF, called ပုတီး at the counter. The fourth digit 1 is the bend angle, where 1 is straight, 4 is 45 degrees and 9 is 90 degrees. The fifth digit 2 is the series, which runs 1 for dash 04 and 06 and 2 from dash 08 upward. Then the first dash number 08 is the thread, G1/2, and the second dash number 08 is the hose. The panel on the right converts every dash size to its bore in millimetres: 04 is 6 mm, 06 is 10 mm, 08 is 13 mm, 12 is 19 mm and 16 is 25 mm.
Which dash is the hose and which is the thread?

Dash 04 is 6 mm, 05 is 8 mm, 06 is 10 mm, 08 is 13 mm, 10 is 16 mm, 12 is 19 mm, 16 is 25 mm, 20 is 32 mm, 24 is 38 mm and 32 is 51 mm. What does the fourth digit do?

It is the bend angle: 1 straight, 4 is 45 degrees, 9 is 90 degrees. This was tested against roughly six thousand part numbers across two vendor lists and it did not fail once. So 22612, 22642 and 22692 are one fitting in three shapes, and the same holds for 267, 296, 242 and every other family.

What does the fifth digit do?

It is the series, and in stock it tracks hose size. Series 1 carries the small hose sizes, dash 04 and 06. Series 2 takes over from dash 08 upward. Across the eighteen families in the fast-moving list, seventeen split cleanly at that point. Two exceptions matter: family 267, the JIC group, runs series 1 across its whole range from 04 to 16, and family 700 carries both series at 04 and 06.

Should I use the series digit to work out the size?

No. Read the second dash for size and let the series digit follow from it. The two series are the same physical size where they overlap — at dash 12 both weigh 0.444 kg and at dash 16 both weigh 0.761 kg. The series digit tells you which product line the part sits in, not how big it is.

How do I read the description beside the code?

Bore in millimetres, then the thread, then a seat letter, then the angle. So 13 x G1/2 D 45 degrees is a 13 mm bore, a BSP half inch thread, a D seat, at 45 degrees. G marks a BSP thread and U marks a UN thread: 26711-08-08 reads 13 x U3/4 C, a JIC thread with a cone seat.

What do the seat letters A, C and D mean?

The seat letter and any trailing letter. A trailing D marks the double hexagon version, as in 22611D; T and SP mark supplier variants; H with a number is the drop height in millimetres, as in 34292-12-12 H100. Two codes that differ only in a trailing letter are two different parts. Bring the old fitting to the counter, or send us a photograph with the code visible.
