Five thread standards cover almost every port in this catalogue, and two of them will screw into each other far enough to look right and then leak. Learning to separate them takes a caliper, a thread gauge and ten minutes, and it prevents the most expensive mistake in hydraulics.

What is BSPP and how does it seal?

British Standard Pipe Parallel, sometimes written G. The thread is parallel and has a 55 degree form, and it does not seal on the thread at all — it seals on a bonded washer under the hexagon or on a 60 degree cone seat inside the female. Our 6002 series adapters are male ORFS to male BSPP, and that BSPP end needs its seal to be present and undamaged.

What is the difference between BSPP and BSPT?

BSPT is the tapered version, written R. It seals on the thread itself, so it needs thread sealant and it tightens progressively rather than stopping at a shoulder. A BSPT male will start into a BSPP female and feel right for two or three turns before it binds — that is a wrong assembly, not a tight one.

Why do BSP and NPT get confused?

Because at 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch they share the same threads per inch — fourteen — and their diameters are within a fraction of a millimetre of each other. A thread gauge will not separate them at those two sizes. The thread angle does: BSP is 55 degrees and NPT is 60. Hold both against a thread profile gauge, or compare a known good fitting side by side.

What happens if I force an NPT male into a BSP female?

It will go in, it will feel tight, and it will hold at low pressure for a while. What it is actually doing is cutting a new thread form into the softer part and leaving a spiral gap. At full system pressure it weeps, and under a spike it can release — with a jet of oil at several hundred bar. Never force a thread that does not feel free for its full engagement.

What is JIC and how do I recognise it?

A 37 degree flare, covered by SAE J514. Look at the end of the male fitting — you will see a clear cone, and the female has a matching 37 degree seat. The thread is UNF and parallel; it holds the parts together while the cone does the sealing. Our 6804 and 6803 tees are JIC, and the titles quote the exact thread for each dash size.

What are ORFS and ORB, and how do they differ?

ORFS is O-ring face seal — the male has a flat face with an O-ring sitting in a groove on it, and it seals against the flat face of the female. ORB is O-ring boss — the male has an O-ring under a shoulder near the thread, and it seals against the flat face of the port it screws into. ORFS is the hose-to-hose joint; ORB is how a fitting enters a pump or valve body. Our 6002 series is ORFS to BSPP, and the 6900, 6815 and 6805 series are ORB one end.

What is NPSM and why does it appear on swivels?

NPSM is the straight version of the American pipe thread, and it is used with a 60 degree cone seat so the nut can turn freely and still seal. That is exactly what a swivel needs — our 6900 series is ORB male to NPSM female swivel for that reason. A straight NPSM will not seal against a tapered NPT port, because the taper has nothing to seat against.
