The same counter sells hydraulic hose, air hose, brake hose and oil hose, and they are not interchangeable even where the fittings look similar. Each is built for a different fluid, a different pressure and a different set of rules, and substituting one for another is how people get hurt.

Can I use hydraulic hose for compressed air?

The pressure rating is far higher than an air line needs, so it will not burst — but that is not the whole question. Compressed air stores energy in a way oil does not, so a failure is far more violent, and the fitting attachment rather than the hose is usually the weak point. Use an assembly rated and built for air, and use the safety clips or whip checks the air standard calls for.

Brake hose is built to its own standard with its own approvals, the fittings are specific to it, and it must not be substituted with hydraulic hose of a similar bore even though the pressure rating would allow it. What sizes do brake hose assemblies come in?

What is oil hose used for?

Low-pressure oil transfer — fuel lines, lubrication feeds, drain and return lines and dispensing. The rubber compound is chosen for oil resistance rather than for pressure, so the wall is thinner and the rating much lower than hydraulic. It is the right part for a return line and the wrong part for anything downstream of a pump.

How do I tell which hose I am holding?

Read the layline. Every properly made hose carries printing along its length with the manufacturer, the standard, the bore size and the working pressure. A hose with no layline, or with the printing worn away, should be treated as unknown and not fitted to a pressure line. That is not caution for its own sake — an unknown hose has an unknown rating.

Does the fluid matter as much as the pressure?

Just as much. The inner tube compound is chosen for what will flow through it, and the wrong compound swells, softens or hardens. A hose that is fine on mineral oil can fail quickly on a synthetic fluid or on fuel. Tell the counter what the line will carry as well as the pressure and the size.

The equipment is largely the same but the stock and the rules are not. Hydraulic and air assemblies are routine work. Brake hose is a regulated part and should be bought as an approved assembly rather than built from bulk hose, unless the shop holds the specific approvals. Ask before ordering — the answer is a safety matter, not a service preference.
