Making hose assemblies in-house pays for itself quickly on any site that runs machines, but only if the setup is right. A crimper, a matched die set, a caliper and the manufacturer chart are the whole kit — and leaving out any one of the four turns a repair into a gamble.

What does a manual crimper do?

It closes a set of dies around the ferrule to a stop, compressing it evenly all the way round. Our UNIFLEX S2 M Ecoline is a manual machine of that type — no power supply needed, which is what makes it practical on a site or in a workshop with intermittent electricity. Capacity is limited by hand force, so check the largest hose size the machine is rated for before buying.

How do I choose the right die set?

By the crimp diameter you need to reach, not by the hose size directly. Our UNIFLEX UA4 adjustable sets are listed by millimetre range — 280-6.8 for 6.8 to 9 mm, 280-9 for 9 to 12, 280-12 for 12 to 14 and 280-14 for 14 to 17. Work out the target crimp diameter from the chart first, then pick the set whose range contains it.

Does a crimper need calibrating?

Yes, and it drifts with use. Dies wear, stops move and the machine settles, so a crimp that was correct a year ago may now be a few tenths out. Check it by crimping a test piece and measuring, not by trusting the setting. Any workshop making assemblies for others should record those checks — it is the only evidence that the assembly leaving the door was right.

What else does the bench need?

A hose cutting wheel that cuts square without fraying the wire, a vernier caliper, a marker pen for the insertion mark, hose caps for finished assemblies, and somewhere clean to work. A hacksaw is not a hose cutter — it tears the braid and leaves wire whiskers inside that end up in the pump.

Is it worth buying a crimper for one machine?

Judge it on downtime rather than on the price of hoses. If a burst hose stops a machine that is earning, and the nearest assembly shop is hours away, a manual crimper and a small stock of hose, ferrules and common fittings pays for itself the first time. If the machine can wait a day, buying made-up assemblies is cheaper and more reliable.

What stock should a workshop hold?

Hose in the two or three sizes the machines actually use, ferrules to match in the same series, and the fitting ends that appear most often on those machines — usually JIC and BSPP in a couple of dash sizes, plus a few 90 degree elbows. Walk the machines and write down what is fitted; that list is more useful than any general recommendation.

What goes wrong most often when a workshop starts making its own?

Mixing series. A ferrule from one manufacturer on a fitting from another, crimped to a chart from a third, produces an assembly that looks perfect and has no known rating. Keep hose, ferrule and fitting within one supplier system and use that supplier chart. It is the single discipline that separates a reliable in-house assembly from a gamble.
