How do I tell the shape from the part number?

Count the dashes first — two for a straight, three for a tee or a cross-style fitting. Then read the prefix and the description, which our listings always spell out: 6805 and 6806 are 90 degree elbows, 6815 is a 90 degree elbow with an ORB female, 6803 is a branch tee and 6804 is a run tee. The dash count and the description together are unambiguous.

What is the difference between a run tee and a branch tee?

Which port is the odd one out. On a run tee the two ends in line with each other are the same type and the side port differs — our 6804-06-06-06 has JIC on the two in-line ports and ORB male on the branch. On a branch tee it is the other way round: 6803-16-16-16 has JIC on two ports and the ORB male as one of the through ports. Getting this wrong means the fitting will not orient correctly on the valve.

Whenever tightening the fitting would twist the hose. A rigid fitting on both ends means the last one tightened turns the whole assembly, and a twisted hose fails early. Passing a line through a panel and supporting it there. The fitting carries a long thread and a locknut so it clamps to the plate, which means the plate takes the load instead of the hose. How tight should a fitting be?

To the figure for that thread and size, not to feel. A cone or O-ring seal is made by contact, not by force, and over-tightening deforms the cone or extrudes the O-ring so it leaks worse than before. Where a torque figure is not available, the flats-from-finger-tight method is the usual practice — tighten by hand, then a specified part turn.

A steel adapter with a parallel thread and a replaceable seal, usually yes — renew the bonded washer or the O-ring and inspect the cone for scoring. A tapered thread that has been sealed and tightened is less reliable second time, and a cone with a witness ring cut into it by over-tightening should be scrapped. The seal is the cheap part; replace it every time.

How do I stop an elbow pointing the wrong way?

Use an adjustable fitting where the direction matters. An ORB male with an O-ring under a shoulder can be screwed in, rotated to the angle you want and then locked with its nut — which is why our catalogue carries adjustable elbows and run tees separately from fixed ones. A fixed elbow lands where the thread stops, and that is rarely where you want it.
