Not every code follows the five-digit pattern, and not every first dash means the same thing. The metric families measure their thread in millimetres, one BSP family seals on a flat face instead of a cone, and some ranges use letters instead of numbers entirely. These are the exceptions worth knowing before you order.

Three groups. 204 is Metric Female 24 degree cone with an O-ring, the DIN 3865 type — 20411 straight, 20441 at 45, 20491 at 90. 286 and 186 are JIS Metric Female 60 degree cone seat — 28611 straight, 28641 at 45, 28691 at 90. And 296 is the JIS GAS version of the same 60 degree cone, which is why it takes a G thread rather than a metric one.

Careful — the first dash is not always a dash size

On the metric families the first number is the thread diameter in millimetres, not sixteenths of an inch. In 28611-42-24 the 42 is an M42 thread; in 20411-16-04 the 16 is M16x1.5, written MO-16x1.5 in the description. The second number is still the hose. So read the first dash as millimetres when the family is metric, and as a dash size when it is BSP, JIC or ORFS.

BSP Female Flat Seat — a BSP thread that seals on a flat face rather than on a cone, which is the A seat letter. It is easy to confuse with 226 BSPF, because both are BSP female and the threads are identical. The seat is the whole difference: 222 is flat, 226 is a 60 degree cone. Fit one where the other belongs and it will tighten and still weep.

Yes, and they follow their own logic. The FDINHX range is DIN Heavy Universal Seat Female Swivel crimp fittings, where the angle is written into the code as a suffix — FDINHX straight, FDINHX45, FDINHX90 — and the two dashes are hose size then metric thread, as in FDINHX-08-24 for a 1/2 inch hose on M24x1.5. The B- range is brass, such as B-143 and B-287 hose barb to female swivel.

How do I avoid mixing up 222 and 226 at the counter?

Look at the sealing face of the old fitting before you read the code. If the inside of the nut is a smooth flat ring, it is 222 flat seat. If it is a tapered funnel, it is 226 at 60 degrees. The thread will not tell you and the outside of the nut will not tell you — only the face does.

What should I quote for a metric fitting?

The thread in millimetres with its pitch, then the hose size. M22x1.5 on a 1/2 inch hose is unambiguous; "twenty-two" on its own is not, because M22x1.5 and M22x2 are different parts. The description on our listings writes it out in full, as in MO-22x1.5-08, so read it from there rather than from the dash alone.

What is the difference between the 186 and 286 families?

Both are JIS Metric Female 60 degree cone seat and both cover the same thread range, from M14 up to M42. They are two parallel series of the same fitting, in the same way that 22611 and 22612 are. Order by the code that is on the old part rather than converting between them, and if the old code is unreadable ask the counter to confirm which series that machine uses.
