On the metric families the first number is the thread diameter in millimetres, not sixteenths of an inch. In 28611-42-24 the 42 is an M42 thread; in 20411-16-04 the 16 is M16x1.5, written MO-16x1.5 in the description. The second number is still the hose. How do I tell a metric female fitting from a BSP one by hand?

Measure and count rather than judging by eye, because the two families overlap closely enough that a metric fitting will start onto a BSP thread and feel almost right before it binds.
