A camlock joint goes together in about two seconds with no tools, which is why it is on every fuel bowser, water tanker and site pump. The whole system works because the body shapes are standardised by letter, so any maker mates with any other — as long as you order by the letter.

What do the letters mean?

They identify the body shape. Our range carries type A, which is a male cam and groove adapter with a female NPT thread, type E with a hose shank, and type F with a male NPT thread. The coupler halves that clamp onto them carry their own letters. Order by letter, size and material and the halves will mate.

How are camlocks sized?

In the same sixteenths as the rest of the catalogue. CAM-AL-A-08 is 1/2 inch, -12 is 3/4, -16 is one inch, -20 is 1-1/4 and -24 is 1-1/2. Where two dashes appear the coupling is a reducer — CAM-AL-A-12-08 is a 3/4 inch cam end with a 1/2 inch NPT thread.

Aluminium or brass — which should I buy?

Aluminium is lighter and cheaper and suits water, fuel and general site transfer, which is why most of our range is AL. Brass is heavier, costs more and stands up better to some chemicals and to seawater. Match the material to what flows through it, and keep dissimilar metals apart where the coupling will sit connected for long periods in the wet.

What holds the joint together?

Two cam arms swinging over a groove, pulling the two faces onto a gasket. That is also the limitation: the arms hold against pressure but nothing holds them against being knocked open. On anything above a low pressure, or anywhere someone could walk into it, fit safety clips or pins through the arms.

What is the pressure limit?

Low compared with a threaded or flanged joint, and it falls as the size rises — a 1-1/2 inch coupling is rated well below a 1/2 inch one. Read the rating on the part. Camlocks are for transfer, not for hydraulics; a camlock on a pressure line is a serious hazard because the arms will open before the body fails.

What maintenance do they need?

Very little, and it is mostly the gasket. Replace it when it hardens, splits or takes a permanent set, and match the material to the fluid. Keep the cam arms and pins free and lubricated, keep dust plugs in place on open ends, and check the groove for damage — a dented groove will not let the arms pull the faces fully together.

Can a camlock be left connected permanently?

It can, but it is the wrong part for the job. A camlock exists so a joint can be broken quickly and often; leaving one connected for years means the gasket takes a permanent set, the arms seize and the groove corrodes — and then it neither seals nor comes apart. For a permanent joint use a threaded or flanged fitting and keep the camlock for the connection that actually gets opened.
