The SAE standard names a hose by its construction and the trade in Myanmar names it by the number of wire layers. Both describe the same thing, and a customer who asks for နှစ်ထပ် is asking for R2. This article puts the two naming systems side by side for every size we stock.

What is the layer naming?

One wire braid is R1 and is called တစ်ထပ်. Two wire braids is R2, နှစ်ထပ်. Four spiral wires is R4 or 4SH, လေးထပ်. The Myanmar name carries the layer count and nothing else, so it tells you the pressure class but not the bore — which is why the size always has to be said as well.

How is a full hose description spoken?

Size then layers. In our master data the pairings are written exactly that way — 1/4 inch R1 is တစ်မတ် တစ်ထပ်, 3/8 inch R1 is သုံးမှူး တစ်ထပ် and R2 is သုံးမှူး နှစ်ထပ်, 1/2 inch R1 is ငါးမှူး တစ်ထပ် and R2 is ငါးမှူး နှစ်ထပ်, 5/8 R2 is ခြောက်မှူး နှစ်ထပ်.

What about the larger sizes?

The same pattern continues all the way up. 3/4 inch is သုံးမတ် — R1 တစ်ထပ်, R2 နှစ်ထပ်, R4 လေးထပ်. 1 inch is တစ်လက်မ in all three layers. 1-1/4 is ငါးမတ်, 1-1/2 is တစ်လက်မခွဲ and 2 inch is နှစ်လက်မ, each available as တစ်ထပ်, နှစ်ထပ် or လေးထပ်.

What is 4SH and is it the same as R4?

Our master data writes them together as the four-layer option, and in the trade လေးထပ် covers both. They are not identical standards — R4 is a suction and return hose while 4SH is a four-spiral high pressure hose — so when a customer asks for လေးထပ်, confirm whether the line is suction or pressure before picking. That one question prevents the most serious mismatch in this section.

Does a higher layer count always mean better?

For pressure yes, for everything else no. More wire means a stiffer hose with a larger minimum bend radius and a bigger outside diameter, so a four-layer hose may not route where a two-layer one did and may not fit the same clamps. Buy the layer count the pressure needs, not the most the shelf has.

What should a customer say to get the right hose?

Three things: the size in whichever name they know, the layer count, and what the line does — pressure, return or suction. "ငါးမှူး နှစ်ထပ်, pressure line" is a complete order. Without the third part, a four-layer request is ambiguous between R4 and 4SH, and those two are not interchangeable.

How is hose length quoted with the size?

Our assembly records quote hose as size, then layer, then length in inches — for example 1/2 inch R2 at a stated length, written as 1/2XR2 with the length beside it. The length on an assembly is measured face to face across the finished fittings, not along the rubber, so always say whether a length you are quoting is the rubber or the complete assembly.
