A cam bolt is only as good as the torque holding it. Get the size right and the eccentric gives you the range you need; get the torque wrong and the setting walks out within a few thousand kilometres. These are the numbers our counter staff check before handing a kit over.

What bolt diameters are used?

Two sizes cover almost the whole range. M12, usually M12 x 1.5, is the common rear-axle eccentric on BMW 33-series and VAG 501-series parts. M14, usually M14 x 1.5, appears on Honda and Acura rear lower arms such as 52387-SNA-A00 and 52388-S84-A00. A few heavier vehicles use M16. Never substitute a smaller bolt and pack it with washers.

What does eccentricity mean and what value is normal?

Eccentricity is how far the bolt centre sits from the centre of the cam disc. Factory eccentrics are typically 1.5 to 2.0 mm; aftermarket kits run 2.0 to 2.5 mm. Because rotating the cam 180 degrees swings the arm through twice the offset, a 2.0 mm eccentric gives 4.0 mm of total movement at the mounting eye.

How much camber does one millimetre of movement buy?

It depends on the arm length. On a typical rear lower arm of 300 to 350 mm, 1 mm at the inner mounting is roughly 0.17 to 0.20 degrees of camber. So a 2.0 mm eccentric, giving 4.0 mm of swing, is worth about 0.7 degrees in each direction — which matches the plus or minus 0.75 degree figure quoted for most factory cams.

What torque should a cam bolt be tightened to?

Use the vehicle figure — cam bolts are not generic. As a guide, an M12 rear eccentric is commonly in the 90 to 110 N.m band, often quoted as a base torque plus a 90 degree angle turn; an M14 Honda rear arm bolt is commonly 60 to 70 N.m plus angle. Too low and the cam turns under braking; too high and you crush the cam plate so it can no longer be adjusted.

Are cam bolts single-use?

Any bolt tightened by torque-plus-angle is stretched past its elastic limit and must be replaced, not re-used. That covers most VAG 501-series and BMW 33-series eccentrics. A plain torque-only cam bolt may be re-used if the threads are clean and the cam face is not scored, but a bolt that has been heated or cut out is always scrap.

Do I need the collar and washer as well, or just the bolt?

The cam plate and the collar are the parts that actually do the work — the bolt only clamps them. A worn cam plate with rounded lobes will slip no matter how well the bolt is torqued. Buy the bolt, cam plate, collar and nut as a set; that is how the FEBEST 0329, 1929, 1930 and 2329 kits are packed, and it is why they cost more than a bare bolt.

What tools does the job need?

A torque wrench that reads to at least 150 N.m, an angle gauge if the spec calls for torque-plus-angle, a 17 mm or 19 mm socket and ring spanner for the M12 and M14 heads, penetrating oil, and a trolley jack plus a stand or ramp so the suspension can be loaded to ride height before the final tightening. Without the angle gauge you cannot meet the spec on most European rear axles.
