Most cam bolt sales are not caused by a broken bolt — they are caused by a bolt that has rusted solid inside an aluminium arm, or one that keeps turning after the alignment is set. Both problems have clear symptoms and both have a right and a wrong way to deal with them.

Why do cam bolts seize so badly?

Galvanic corrosion. A steel bolt sitting inside an aluminium arm in a wet, salty environment produces aluminium oxide, which occupies more space than the metal it came from and locks the bolt in place. In coastal and monsoon conditions a bolt can be immovable in 4 to 6 years. The bolt is usually fine; it is the swelling inside the bore that traps it.

How do I free a seized cam bolt without wrecking the arm?

Soak with penetrating oil and leave it 24 hours, then work the bolt back and forth a few degrees at a time rather than forcing one long turn. Heat is a last resort and must go on the arm, never the bolt — heating the bolt expands it inside the bore and makes it worse. If it will not move, the correct repair is to cut the bolt with a reciprocating saw on both sides of the bushing and press the remains out.

Can I reuse a bolt that is only lightly rusted?

Check three things. The thread must take a nut by hand for its full length; the cam lobe faces must still have sharp edges, not rounded ones; and the shank must show no necking or bending. The alignment was done but the tyre is still wearing. What now?

What else should be replaced at the same time?

Whatever the bolt passes through. If the arm is off the car anyway, the bushing it clamps is the sensible replacement — labour is already paid for and a tired bushing will undo the new setting. On a rear multi-link axle, inspect the trailing arm bushing and the toe link end at the same time, and re-align afterwards, not before.

How long should a correct alignment hold?

On sound suspension with cam bolts torqued at ride height, 15,000 to 20,000 km or about a year is normal. If the car is back inside 5,000 km, the cause is mechanical — a loose cam, a worn bushing or a bent arm — not the alignment settings. Do not pay for a second alignment until the mechanical cause is found.

Is it safe to drive with a cam bolt that will not hold?

Short distances at low speed to reach a workshop, yes. Beyond that, no.
