What to Replace Alongside a Rack End

Replacing a rack end means releasing the steering rack bellows and unscrewing the tie rod, so several parts are exposed at once and a wheel alignment is required afterwards. Always replace the rack bellows at the same time, and inspect the tie rod end, the opposite side, and the rack itself while everything is open.

Why must the bellows be replaced?

Because the bellows is what keeps water and grit away from the rack end and from the steering rack's internal seals, and it is almost always damaged when it is released. Refitting an old bellows means the new rack end starts taking in road water immediately, which is exactly what destroyed the old one. A bellows is inexpensive relative to the labour of doing the job twice.

Usually yes. Both rack ends sit in the same rack, protected by bellows of the same age, and have steered the same distance. The labour of opening the second side once the vehicle is already on the lift is small compared with returning later, and the job needs only one wheel alignment when both are done at once.
