Replacing a tie rod end means dismantling part of the steering linkage and paying for a wheel alignment afterwards, so the parts around it should be inspected in the same job. Should both sides be replaced together?

Tie rod ends are sold individually, so replacing both is a choice rather than a requirement. Both sides have steered the same distance over the same roads, so if one has developed play the other is usually close behind. Because the job needs one wheel alignment either way, doing both sides at once means paying for one alignment instead of two.

What happens if the alignment is skipped?

The toe angle will be wrong from the moment the new joint is fitted, because the adjustment is made by rotating the tie rod and that setting is disturbed during the work. The vehicle may pull to one side, the steering wheel may sit off-centre, and the front tyres will begin scrubbing immediately. An alignment is part of the job, not an optional extra.
