Watch for these, roughly in the order they appear as a tie rod end wears.

How is a tie rod end tested?

A workshop raises the wheel clear of the ground, supports the vehicle safely, then rocks the wheel from side to side at the nine and three o'clock positions while watching the joint. Side-to-side play points to the tie rod ends; top-to-bottom play points to the ball joints. Any detectable movement within the joint itself means it is worn. This needs the wheel unloaded and properly supported, so it is workshop work.

Treat it as urgent. A tie rod end is the link between your steering wheel and the road wheel, and if the joint separates that wheel can no longer be steered at all. Unlike a worn shock absorber, which degrades performance gradually, a failed tie rod end removes steering control of one wheel completely. If a workshop has found play, arrange the replacement rather than postponing it.
