The first sign of a worn ball joint is usually a knocking or clunking noise from a front corner when driving over bumps or dips. Vague steering, uneven tyre wear and a torn rubber boot are the other common signs. A ball joint that has started knocking should be inspected without delay, because a ball joint carries the weight of the vehicle.

What are the warning signs?

Watch for these, roughly in the order they appear as a ball joint wears.

- A knocking or clunking from a front corner over bumps, dips and speed humps.

- Steering feels loose or wanders, and the vehicle does not hold a straight line.
- A creaking noise when the steering is turned at low speed or at a standstill.
- The tyre on that corner wears unevenly, often on the inner or outer edge.
- Vibration through the steering wheel that was not there before.

Why does the torn rubber boot matter so much?

The rubber boot seals grease inside the joint and keeps water and grit out. Once the boot splits, the grease washes out and road grit gets in, and the grit then grinds the ball against its socket. A ball joint that was in good condition can wear out within months of the boot splitting, which is why a torn boot found during a service should be treated as a reason to replace the joint rather than something to watch.

How is a ball joint tested?

A workshop raises the wheel clear of the ground, supports the vehicle safely, then rocks the wheel from top to bottom while watching and feeling the joint for free play. Any detectable movement in the joint itself means it is worn. Some vehicles have a manufacturer specification for permissible play, measured with a dial gauge. This test requires the wheel unloaded and the vehicle properly supported, so it is workshop work.
