What are the warning signs?

Why does the torn rubber boot matter so much?

How is a ball joint tested?

How much play is acceptable?

Very little — many makers quote a limit of 0.5 to 1.5 mm of axial movement, and some specify zero detectable play. Any knock you can feel through your hand on the tyre is beyond the limit. Can a ball joint be greased back to life?
