Why does the boot matter so much?

What is a load-carrying versus a follower joint?

A load-carrying joint takes the vehicle weight through it — usually the lower joint on a strut-less suspension, or the upper on a design where the spring sits on the upper arm. A follower joint only locates the knuckle and carries no vertical load. How is a ball joint checked on the vehicle?

Lift the wheel clear of the ground and load the joint the right way for its type. For a lower load-carrying joint, place the jack under the arm so the spring load is off the joint, then lever between the arm and the knuckle. For a follower joint, rock the wheel top to bottom. What happens if a ball joint separates completely?
