Replacing a ball joint means dismantling the front suspension and paying for a wheel alignment afterwards, so the parts around it should be inspected during the same job. These parts are already accessible once the suspension is apart.

- The tie rod end on the same side, which wears from the same causes.
- The control arm bushings, which perish with age and heat.

- The rubber boots on every remaining joint, since a split boot is the usual cause of early failure.
- The tyre on that corner, for the uneven wear a worn joint produces.

Ball joints are sold individually rather than in pairs, so replacing both is a choice rather than a requirement. In practice both sides have carried the same weight over the same distance, so if one has worn out the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at the same time means paying for one alignment instead of two, which often makes it the cheaper decision overall.

Is the wheel alignment really necessary?

Yes. The ball joint is part of the geometry that sets the angle of the wheel, so replacing one changes that geometry. Without an alignment the tyres wear unevenly, often within weeks, and the vehicle may pull to one side or feel unstable at speed. The cost of one alignment is far below the cost of a pair of tyres worn out early.
