The Original Equipment (OE) number is the reliable way to match a rack end, because rack ends differ in thread size, thread direction and length between models that otherwise look identical. Why can I not just read the number off the old part?

You usually cannot see it without dismantling. The rack end sits under a rubber bellows clamped to the steering rack, and the bellows has to be released to expose it. Since the part is only reached during the repair itself, ordering in advance means working from the vehicle record rather than from the part. - Whether the part is side-specific — some rack ends are, some fit either side.
- The quantity — one per side, so two for a full replacement.

Yes, always. The rack end is part of the assembly that sets the toe angle, and the tie rod has to be unscrewed from it during the work, which disturbs the setting. Replacing a rack end without aligning afterwards produces rapid uneven tyre wear. Why is a rack end harder to identify than a tie rod end?

What does a rack end kit usually contain?

Should both rack ends be replaced together?

Yes in practice. Both sit in the same rack, have done the same distance, and reaching either one means removing the boot and the outer tie rod end on that side.
