A rack end and a tie rod end sit at opposite ends of the same rod. The diagram follows the steering linkage from the rack outwards. 1 the RACK END, the inner joint, screws into the end of the steering rack itself and lives inside the rubber bellows, so it cannot be seen without opening one; it gives a knock felt straight ahead, and play you can feel by rocking the rod itself rather than the outer joint, and a torn bellows is what kills it because grit and water get straight in. 2 the TIE ROD END, the outer joint, screws onto the threaded end of the rack end and connects to the steering arm through its own tapered stud; it gives a knock when turning or over bumps, vague steering and uneven wear on the tyre shoulder, and it is visible with the wheel on full lock, where the boot should be checked first. 3 the toe is set on the thread between them, with the lock nut: turn the rod to adjust, then lock the nut. Changing either joint moves the toe, so the alignment must always be re-set afterwards. Counting the turns on the way off gets you close enough to drive to the aligner but not close enough to skip it, because wrong toe scrubs a new tyre out in weeks.

What tool is needed to undo a rack end?

An inner tie rod tool — a long socket or crow's foot that reaches down the rack tube and grips the flats on the rack end body. An ordinary spanner will not fit inside the bellows, and gripping the rack shaft with pliers to hold it damages the seal surface the rack runs through.
