What the Steering Linkage Does — Rack Ends, Idler Arms and Centre Links

(Steering Linkage)

The steering linkage is the chain of rods and joints that carries movement from your steering wheel out to the road wheels. On a rack and pinion system that chain is short — rack end, then tie rod end. On an older recirculating ball system it is longer, adding a centre link and an idler arm. Every joint in the chain is a wear point, and play in any one of them shows up as loose steering.

Rack and pinion steering linkage with rack end and tie rod end each side, compared with a recirculating ball layout adding a pitman arm, centre link and idler arm

The diagram lays the two steering layouts side by side. On a rack and pinion system the chain from the steering wheel to the road wheel is short: a rack end — also called the inner tie rod — screws into the rack, and a tie rod end carries the movement out to the steering arm. Two joints per side, so fewer wear points and tighter steering. On an older recirculating ball system the chain is longer: the steering box turns a pitman arm, which moves a centre link across the vehicle, with an idler arm on the far side mirroring the pitman and holding the link level, and a tie rod end at each outer end. Every joint in either chain is a wear point, and play in any one of them shows up at the steering wheel as the same loose feeling. That is why each joint is checked separately — one worn idler arm can feel like four worn joints — and why the worn one should be found before the easy one is replaced.

What does each part do?

Each has a distinct job in the chain.

  • Rack end — also called the inner tie rod. It screws into the end of the steering rack and passes the rack's side-to-side movement into the tie rod. It sits under a rubber bellows.
  • Tie rod end — the outer joint that connects the tie rod to the wheel and turns it.
  • Centre link — on recirculating ball systems, the long rod running across the vehicle that the tie rods attach to.
  • Idler arm — supports the far end of the centre link and lets it swing. It is the mirror of the pitman arm on the steering box side.

Which system does my vehicle have?

Most passenger cars built in the last three decades use rack and pinion, which has no centre link and no idler arm. Older pickups, four-wheel drives and commercial vehicles often use a recirculating ball steering box with a centre link and idler arm. If a search for your vehicle returns idler arms and centre links, you have the older system; if it returns only rack ends and tie rod ends, you have rack and pinion.

Why does play anywhere in the chain feel the same?

Because the chain is only as tight as its loosest joint. Movement that is lost in a worn rack end never reaches the wheel, and neither does movement lost in a tie rod end or an idler arm. The driver feels the same vague, delayed response whichever joint is at fault, which is why identifying the specific worn joint needs a workshop check rather than a road test.

What is a recirculating ball steering box system?

Recirculating ball

The older layout still used on many pickups and light trucks. A steering box turns a pitman arm, which pushes a centre link, which is supported at the other end by an idler arm and drives two tie rod ends. It has more joints than a rack system — six or more wear points instead of four.

What does an idler arm actually do?

Idler

It is a pivot bracket bolted to the chassis that supports the free end of the centre link and keeps it level as it moves side to side. It carries no steering force of its own, only the weight and the sideways load of the link. When its bush or bearing wears, the whole centre link sags and steering becomes vague.

Which joint in the linkage wears first?

On a box system the idler arm and the pitman arm ball usually go first because they take the load of the centre link continuously. On a rack system it is the outer tie rod ends. Either way the worn joint shows up as play at the steering wheel before anything is heard.

Why do trucks still use the box and linkage system?

Because it carries load and abuse better. A recirculating ball box multiplies effort through gears rather than through a rack, so it can steer a heavy axle without power assistance failing catastrophically, and the separate links can be replaced one at a time. The trade-off is more joints — a box system has an idler arm, a pitman arm, a centre link and two or more tie rods, and every one of them is a wear point a rack system does not have.
