(Steering Linkage)

Steering play means part of your input never reaches the wheels. In normal driving that feels like vagueness; in an emergency it means the vehicle does not go where you point it in the moment you need it to. Play also hides which joint is failing, so a linkage that feels merely loose today can separate without further warning.

What actually happens in an emergency?

An emergency swerve depends on the wheels responding the instant you turn. With play in the linkage the first part of your input is absorbed by the worn joint, so the vehicle starts turning later and turns less than you asked for. At speed that delay covers several metres. The driver then corrects further, and the vehicle can over-respond once the play is taken up, which is how a swerve becomes a loss of control.

Why does play get worse quickly once it starts?

Because the joint is no longer held under tension. Once a ball has clearance inside its socket, every steering input lets it knock rather than rotate smoothly, and each knock removes a little more material. Wear that took years to begin can double in a few months. This is why a joint measured with slight play at one service is often well beyond the limit at the next.

Can I keep driving while I wait for the part?

Ask the workshop that measured the play, because the answer depends on how much there is. Slight play found during a service usually allows short local journeys at low speed while the part is sourced. Play you can feel from the driver's seat, a visible knock at a joint, or a torn boot on the affected joint mean the vehicle should not be driven. Do not make long or fast journeys on a steering joint with known play in any case.
