Why can a front shock absorber not be used at the rear?

Three reasons. The mounting fittings differ, so a front unit often physically will not attach at the rear. The extended and compressed lengths differ, so even where it bolts on the travel is wrong. And the internal valving is tuned for a different weight, so the damping would be wrong even if it fitted. Any one of these makes the vehicle handle unpredictably.

How do I know which position I need?

Identify the end of the vehicle where the problem appears, then match the position stated in the product title. If the vehicle bounces or nose-dives under braking, the fault is usually at the front. If the rear end floats over bumps or sags when loaded, the fault is usually at the rear. Do I have to replace front and rear at the same time?

No, but you must always replace both sides of the same axle together. Front shock absorbers usually wear faster than rear ones because the front axle carries the engine and takes the weight transfer under braking. Replacing only one side of an axle leaves the vehicle damping unevenly, which is worse than leaving both worn units in place.
