What happens if I replace only one side?

Why do both sides wear at the same rate anyway?

Both units on an axle have travelled the same distance, carried the same load and worked through the same road surfaces. If one has failed the other is close behind it, even if it has not failed yet. Should I replace all four at once?

Not necessarily. Front and rear wear at different rates because the front axle carries the engine and takes the weight transfer under braking, so it is normal to replace the front pair more often than the rear. What actually happens if only one is replaced?

Is a wheel alignment needed after replacing dampers?

After replacing plain shock absorbers, usually not. After replacing McPherson struts, yes — the strut locates the wheel and camber is often adjusted at the strut-to-knuckle bolts, so the geometry is disturbed by definition.
