The boot is a rubber bellows that holds grease around the joint and keeps water and grit out. Almost every CV joint that gets replaced was killed by a boot that split first. Once grit is inside, the hardened ball tracks are lapped away within weeks, and a repair that would have cost a boot becomes a joint or a whole shaft.

How long does a joint last after the boot splits?

On a clean sealed road, perhaps a few thousand kilometres. On dust and mud, sometimes only a few hundred. The grease is thrown out within days of the split, and from then the joint is running metal on metal with whatever the road throws into it. Caught in the first week, a boot kit saves the joint.

How do I spot a split boot before the noise starts?

Look for grease. A split boot throws grease outward under rotation, so you find it on the inside of the wheel rim, on the inside of the tyre sidewall, on the suspension arm and in an arc on the inner wheel arch. That spray pattern is visible long before the joint makes any sound at all.

Can I just cable-tie the split closed and top up the grease?

No, and it usually makes things worse. The split has already let grit in, and sealing it now traps that grit against the ball tracks with nowhere to escape. If the boot is split, the joint must be opened, washed out completely, inspected and repacked with a new boot. There is no shortcut that saves the joint.
