A CV joint is matched by four things: the number of splines on the stub that goes into the hub, the number of splines on the end that goes into the shaft, the outside diameter of the bell, and on a complete shaft the overall length. Two shafts for the same model year can differ if one vehicle has ABS and the other does not, or if the gearbox differs.

How do I count splines accurately?

Mark one tooth with a paint pen, then count all the way round back to the mark. Common counts are 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 30, and it is very easy to lose count by one on a dirty shaft. If the joint is off, count the female splines in the hub as a cross-check, since they must match exactly.

Why does left and right length differ on the same vehicle?

Because the gearbox and differential are rarely in the centre of the vehicle. One side is therefore longer than the other, often by 200 mm or more, and the longer side frequently carries an intermediate bearing to stop it whipping. Never order a pair assuming they are the same part.

Can I fit a joint from a different trim level?

Only if all four matching points agree. The common traps are a diesel and a petrol version of the same model using different gearbox output splines, an automatic and a manual differing in shaft length, and an ABS model carrying a tone ring the non-ABS shaft does not have. Check all four rather than the model name.
