A CV joint is matched by four things: the number of splines on the stub that goes into the hub, the number of splines on the end that goes into the shaft, the outside diameter of the bell, and on a complete shaft the overall length. How do I count splines accurately?

Mark one tooth with a paint pen, then count all the way round back to the mark. Common counts are 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 30, and it is very easy to lose count by one on a dirty shaft. Why does left and right length differ on the same vehicle?

Because the gearbox and differential are rarely in the centre of the vehicle. One side is therefore longer than the other, often by 200 mm or more, and the longer side frequently carries an intermediate bearing to stop it whipping. Can I fit a joint from a different trim level?

Only if all four matching points agree. The common traps are a diesel and a petrol version of the same model using different gearbox output splines, an automatic and a manual differing in shaft length, and an ABS model carrying a tone ring the non-ABS shaft does not have. How is overall shaft length measured?

From the outer end of the hub stub to the face of the inner joint housing, with the shaft laid straight and the inner joint at its mid-travel position. What does a reconditioned shaft mean in practice?

Usually a used shaft with new boots, new grease and sometimes a new outer joint, on an original bar and splines. It is a reasonable option when the price gap is large and the supplier is known, provided the splines are unworn and the shaft is straight. Does ABS change which shaft I need?

It can. On some vehicles the ABS tone ring is pressed onto the driveshaft rather than onto the hub, so an otherwise identical shaft without the ring will fit and immediately set an ABS fault.
