A CV boot is measured by three numbers: the large end diameter where it clamps to the joint housing, the small end diameter where it clamps to the shaft, and the length from end to end when it is relaxed. A proper kit adds two clamps, the correct grease in the correct quantity, and on most outer joints a new circlip.

What are typical CV boot sizes?

Outer boots on a light vehicle commonly run about 75 to 90 mm at the large end, 18 to 25 mm at the small end and 95 to 120 mm long. Inner boots are larger at the big end, often 85 to 105 mm, because the tulip housing is wider. Measure all three rather than ordering by vehicle, since the same model may use two suppliers.

Is the grease in the kit important, or can I use ordinary grease?

It is important. CV joints need a molybdenum disulphide grease that stays in place under very high contact pressure and does not attack the boot rubber. Ordinary chassis or bearing grease is thrown out of the tracks and can swell the boot. Use what came in the kit, and do not mix two different greases in one joint.

How much grease goes into the joint?

The quantity supplied in the kit, which is typically 80 to 120 grams for an outer joint and a little more for an inner. Work most of it into the joint itself by hand while flexing it, and put the remainder in the boot. Over-filling has nowhere to expand and pushes the boot off its clamp once it warms up.
