A CV boot is measured by three numbers: the large end diameter where it clamps to the joint housing, the small end diameter where it clamps to the shaft, and the length from end to end when it is relaxed. What are typical CV boot sizes?

Outer boots on a light vehicle commonly run about 75 to 90 mm at the large end, 18 to 25 mm at the small end and 95 to 120 mm long. Inner boots are larger at the big end, often 85 to 105 mm, because the tulip housing is wider. Is the grease in the kit important, or can I use ordinary grease?

It is important. CV joints need a molybdenum disulphide grease that stays in place under very high contact pressure and does not attack the boot rubber. Ordinary chassis or bearing grease is thrown out of the tracks and can swell the boot. How much grease goes into the joint?

Work most of it into the joint itself by hand while flexing it, and put the remainder in the boot. What clamps come in a kit and how are they closed?

Usually two — an ear clamp closed with pincers until the ear is flat, or a band clamp pulled with a tensioning tool and folded back. Does the same kit fit the inner and outer joint?

No. The inner joint is larger in diameter and its boot is shorter and more barrel-shaped; the outer is narrower and longer to allow the steering angle. The grease differs too — inner tripod joints usually take a different grade from outer ball-type joints.
