In an interference engine the valves and the pistons share the same space at different moments, so if the timing belt breaks the pistons strike the open valves and the engine is damaged immediately. In a non-interference engine they never share that space, so a broken belt stops the engine but does not bend anything.

How do I find out which type an engine is?

The workshop manual or the engine data sheet states it directly. As a general guide, most modern engines with four valves per cylinder and high compression are interference designs, because the designers used every millimetre of space to raise efficiency. When you cannot confirm it, treat the engine as an interference design and do not take the risk.

What is actually damaged when a belt breaks on an interference engine?

The valves bend first, because they are thin and the piston hits them at speed. Bent valves no longer seal, so the engine loses compression on those cylinders. Piston crowns can be dented, valve guides can crack, and in severe cases a valve head breaks off and scores the cylinder wall. Repair means removing the cylinder head at minimum.

Replacing a timing belt costs a fraction of what repairing a broken one costs, so on an interference engine it is normal to change the belt at the scheduled interval and never to run past it. If the vehicle history is unknown, or the vehicle has stood unused for a long period, changing the belt straight away is cheap insurance.
