A timing belt is replaced on a schedule, not when it looks worn, because it usually gives no warning at all before it fails. The interval is set by the vehicle manufacturer and is written in the service manual as both a distance and a number of years, and whichever comes first is the one that applies.

Intervals vary widely between manufacturers, commonly falling somewhere between 90,000 and 150,000 kilometres, or five to seven years. Some engines are much shorter than that and a few are longer. Because the spread is so wide, a general figure must never be used in place of the figure printed for that specific engine.

What shortens a timing belt life below the stated interval?

Oil or coolant leaking onto the belt is the fastest way to ruin one. Constant short journeys in heavy traffic mean more engine hours for the same distance on the odometer. Very hot operating conditions harden the rubber. A seized or noisy idler or tensioner pulley wears the belt directly. Any of these means bringing the change forward.

Treat the belt as due. There is no way to tell from the outside how long a fitted belt has been in service, and a belt with light use but ten years of age is as risky as a heavily used one. On an interference engine, changing a belt that turns out to have been nearly new is far cheaper than discovering it was not.
