Why a Timing Belt Ages Even When the Vehicle Is Not Driven

Rubber ages on its own. Heat, oxygen and ozone gradually harden a timing belt whether the engine runs or not, which is why the replacement interval has a year figure as well as a distance figure. A vehicle that has stood for years on low mileage still needs the belt changed on time.

What does an aged but little-used belt look like?

The teeth still look square and the fabric facing looks intact, which is why these belts are often passed as serviceable. The rubber body, however, has gone hard and slightly glazed, and fine cracks appear at the root of the teeth and along the back when the belt is bent backwards. Bending a short section the wrong way is the quickest test.

It does, but much more slowly when stored properly. Keep belts flat or hanging on a wide peg, out of sunlight, away from heat and away from electric motors, because motors produce ozone which attacks rubber. Rotate stock so older belts are sold first, and do not sell a belt that has been on the shelf for many years as new.

Many manufacturers print a production date or a batch code on the flat back of the belt alongside the size code. The format differs between brands, so it is not always readable without the manufacturer key. Where a date is present it is worth recording it on the service record at the time of fitting, together with the odometer reading.
