A V-ribbed belt is the single flat belt on the front of the engine that takes power from the crankshaft and drives the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air-conditioning compressor. Why does one belt drive so many parts?

Older engines used two or three separate V-belts, each driving one accessory. A V-ribbed belt replaces them all with one wider, thinner belt. Is a V-ribbed belt the same as a timing belt?

No. They are two different belts with two different jobs. A V-ribbed belt is on the outside of the engine and drives the accessories. A timing belt is inside a cover and keeps the camshaft turning in step with the crankshaft. A V-ribbed belt has ribs running along its length on one side; a timing belt has teeth running across its width. How much power does the belt actually transmit?

More than most people expect. An alternator alone can draw 2 to 5 kW at full output, the air conditioning compressor another 3 to 6 kW, and the power steering pump 1 to 2 kW. Does the belt drive the water pump on every engine?

No, and knowing which applies to a given engine changes how urgent a broken belt is. On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt or by gears inside the engine, so a broken drive belt costs charging and steering but not cooling.
