V-ribbed belts are made from one of two rubber compounds. Older belts use neoprene, also written CR, which hardens and cracks as it ages. Belts made since roughly the mid 2000s use EPDM, which resists heat far better and wears away quietly instead of cracking. Knowing which compound a belt uses changes how you inspect it.

How can I tell whether a belt is EPDM or neoprene?

Look at how the belt has failed rather than at the rubber itself. A neoprene belt that has reached the end of its life shows visible cracks across the ribs, and the rubber feels hard and shiny. An EPDM belt stays flexible and usually shows no cracks at all, but the ribs become shallower and the gaps between them widen. Vehicles built before about 2005 generally came with neoprene.

Why does an EPDM belt with no cracks still need replacing?

EPDM loses material gradually from the rib faces. As the ribs wear thinner the belt sinks deeper into the pulley grooves until the tops of the grooves begin to touch the bottom of the belt. At that point the wedge grip is lost and the belt starts to slip, even though it looks perfectly sound. This is why EPDM belts are checked with a wear gauge rather than by eye.

Does engine oil damage a V-ribbed belt?

Yes, and quickly. Oil softens and swells the rubber, which destroys the shape of the ribs and makes the belt slip and squeal. A belt that has been contaminated with oil, power steering fluid or coolant should be replaced, and the leak that caused it must be fixed first. Fitting a new belt without curing the leak simply ruins the new belt as well.
