Inspect a V-ribbed belt with the engine off and cool. Turn the crankshaft by hand so the whole length of the belt passes a point you can see, and look at the rib faces, the belt edges and the flat backside in turn. What counts as worn depends on whether the belt is neoprene or EPDM.

What am I looking for on a neoprene belt?

Look for cracks running across the ribs. A small number of shallow cracks is normal on an ageing neoprene belt, but three or more cracks within any 25 millimetre length means the belt is finished. Also look for chunks of rubber missing from the rib faces, and for a hard shiny surface, which means the rubber has cured and lost its grip.

What am I looking for on an EPDM belt?

Cracks are rare on EPDM, so look instead at rib depth. Worn ribs are shallower and their tips are rounded rather than sharply pointed, and the valleys between them look wider. Compare the belt against a new one of the same size if you have one to hand. Material loss of even five percent is enough to cause slipping, which is why a gauge is the reliable check.

What does damage at the belt edge tell me?

A frayed, fuzzy or ragged edge on one side means the belt is running at an angle into a pulley. That is a pulley alignment problem, not a belt problem, so fitting another belt without correcting the alignment will destroy the new one as well. Note which edge is damaged, because the damaged side points towards the pulley that is out of line.
