A belt wear gauge is a small plastic tool with a ribbed edge cut to the profile of a new belt. How do I read the gauge?

Do I need a different gauge for each belt profile?

Yes, because the rib pitch differs between profiles. A gauge cut for the PK profile has ribs at 3.56 millimetre spacing and will not sit correctly on a PJ belt, which is at 2.34 millimetres, or a PL belt at 4.70 millimetres. What if I do not have a gauge?

Remove the belt and lay it rib to rib against a new belt of the same size. Hold both up to the light and look along the rib tips. A worn belt shows visibly rounder tips and wider valleys than the new one. At what point does the gauge say replace?
