A belt wear gauge is a small plastic tool with a ribbed edge cut to the profile of a new belt. Pressing it into the ribs of a fitted belt shows immediately whether enough rubber has been lost to cause slipping. It is the only reliable way to judge an EPDM belt, because EPDM wears without cracking.

How do I read the gauge?

Press the gauge into the rib section of the belt with the engine off. If the gauge sits up on the ribs and you can see a gap underneath it, the ribs still have enough material and the belt is serviceable. If the gauge drops in and sits flush against the belt with no gap, the ribs have worn down and the belt should be replaced. Check in three places around the belt, not just one.

Do I need a different gauge for each belt profile?

Yes, because the rib pitch differs between profiles. A gauge cut for the PK profile has ribs at 3.56 millimetre spacing and will not sit correctly on a PJ belt, which is at 2.34 millimetres, or a PL belt at 4.70 millimetres. Most workshop gauges are made for PK because it is by far the most common on passenger vehicles. Check the profile marked on the gauge before using it.

What if I do not have a gauge?

Remove the belt and lay it rib to rib against a new belt of the same size. Hold both up to the light and look along the rib tips. A worn belt shows visibly rounder tips and wider valleys than the new one. This is less precise than a gauge but it is far better than judging the belt on its own, because a worn EPDM belt looks perfectly normal in isolation.
