Belt area noises fall into three groups, and each points at a different fault. A long squeal that rises with engine speed means the belt is slipping. A short repeating chirp in time with engine rotation means a pulley is out of line. A rumble or growl that continues when the belt is removed means a bearing, not the belt.

What causes a squeal on start-up or when the air-conditioning is switched on?

A squeal at those moments is the belt slipping under a sudden load. The usual causes are a weak tensioner that can no longer hold the belt tight, a belt that has worn enough to sink into the pulley grooves, or oil or coolant on the rib faces. Check tensioner movement first, then the rib depth, then look for a leak above the belt path.

How do I tell a belt noise from a bearing noise?

Remove the belt and run the engine for a few seconds only, with the engine cold and with nothing else driven by that belt needed. If the noise is gone, it was the belt or belt tension. If the noise is still there, it is a bearing inside an accessory. With the belt off you can also spin each idler and tensioner pulley by hand and feel for roughness or side play.

Why does the noise appear only when the engine is cold or the weather is wet?

Water on the rib faces reduces grip for a short time, so a belt that is already marginal squeals in the wet and then goes quiet as the water dries. A cold belt is also stiffer and grips slightly less. Noise that comes and goes with weather is an early warning that tension or rib depth is already borderline, even though the belt is quiet the rest of the time.
