Replace a V-ribbed belt when a wear gauge shows the ribs have worn down, when a neoprene belt shows three or more cracks in any 25 millimetre length, when either edge is frayed, when the belt has been contaminated with oil or coolant, or when the service interval in the vehicle manual is reached, whichever comes first.

Should I replace the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time?

On a vehicle that has already covered a high mileage, yes. The tensioner spring weakens and the idler bearings wear at a similar rate to the belt, so a new belt on a tired tensioner will slip, squeal and wear out early. The labour to reach these parts is almost entirely shared with the belt change, so doing them together costs far less than doing them separately later.

Is it worth keeping the old belt as a spare?

Only if the belt was removed while still in good condition, for example because an accessory was being replaced. A belt taken off because it was worn, cracked or contaminated has no value as a spare and will fail quickly if fitted in an emergency. Mark a kept belt with its size and the mileage at which it was removed, and store it flat and away from heat and sunlight.

How should new belts be stored before they are fitted?

Store belts hanging on a wide peg or lying flat, never folded or kinked, because a sharp bend can break the tension cords inside without leaving a visible mark. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from electric motors, since ozone hardens rubber. A dry, cool, dark shelf is ideal. Belts stored correctly remain serviceable for several years.
