To measure an old V-ribbed belt you need two numbers: how many ribs it has, and how long it is. Count the ribs across the width, then lay the belt flat and measure right around the outside with a flexible tape. Those two numbers together give you the size code, for example 6PK1750.

The lower half of the drawing shows where the length figure comes from. The number printed in the size code is the effective length, measured around the belt where the tension cords sit, not around the outer surface and not around the rib tips. A tape laid around the outside will read a few millimetres long, which is close enough to identify the belt but not to specify one.

What tool should I use to measure the length?

A flexible tailor tape or a purpose-made belt measuring tape is best. Lay the belt on a flat surface, keep it in a smooth circle without stretching it, and read the outside circumference in millimetres. A rigid steel rule cannot follow the curve and will give a short reading. If you have no tape, wrap a length of string around the belt, mark it, then measure the string.

The old belt has stretched. Will my measurement be wrong?

A worn belt can read five to ten millimetres longer than its original size, so always round your measurement to the nearest standard size rather than ordering the exact figure you measured. Standard lengths usually step in units of five or ten millimetres. If the measurement falls between two standard sizes, the shorter one is normally correct, because belts lengthen in service and never shorten.

Can I read the size from the belt instead of measuring?

Yes, whenever the printing is still legible. The size code is moulded or printed along the flat backside of the belt, often together with the manufacturer name. Heat and age rub this printing away, so on an old belt it may be readable in only one short section. Clean the backside with a dry cloth and check the whole length before deciding it has gone.
