A V-ribbed belt is fitted by releasing the automatic tensioner with a spanner or a tensioner tool, threading the belt around every pulley according to the routing diagram, and then letting the tensioner back gently. The belt must never be levered on with a screwdriver, because that cuts the tension cords inside.

What is the correct order of steps?

First photograph the old belt in place and note the routing. Second, release the tensioner and remove the old belt. Third, spin every idler and tensioner pulley by hand and listen for roughness. Fourth, check alignment with a straight edge. Fifth, thread the new belt, leaving the easiest pulley until last. Sixth, release the tensioner slowly and confirm every rib is seated in its groove before starting the engine.

Why must I check the ribs are seated before starting the engine?

A belt that sits one rib off to the side looks almost correct at a glance, but one rib will be hanging over the pulley edge. When the engine starts, that rib is cut off within seconds and the belt is ruined. Run a finger along each pulley and confirm the belt edges line up with the pulley edges on every single pulley, including the ones that are hard to see.

Should I use belt dressing spray on a new belt?

No. Belt dressing quietens a squeal for a short time by making the rubber tacky, but it also attracts dust and grit which then grind the rib faces away. It hides the real fault, which is almost always low tension, misalignment or a contaminated belt. Find and fix the cause instead. A correctly fitted belt on aligned pulleys does not need any spray.
