The first number in a size code such as 6PK1750 is the number of ribs, meaning the number of raised V shapes on the underside of the belt. Counting the grooves between them instead gives a number one lower and leads to ordering the wrong belt. Always count the raised ribs.

Why is it so easy to count wrongly?

Because ribs and grooves alternate, a belt always has one more rib than it has full grooves between them. Looking at the belt end on, the eye tends to follow the valleys rather than the peaks. The reliable method is to put a fingernail on the first rib at one edge and step across, counting each peak, until you reach the opposite edge.

How wide should a belt with a given rib count be?

For the PK profile each rib occupies 3.56 millimetres, so a four-rib belt is about 14.2 millimetres wide, a five-rib belt about 17.8, a six-rib belt about 21.4, a seven-rib belt about 24.9 and an eight-rib belt about 28.5 millimetres. Measuring the width with a vernier and dividing by 3.56 is a useful way to check a rib count you are unsure of.

Can I fit a belt with one more or one fewer rib?

No. A belt with fewer ribs than the pulley will not fill the grooves and will slip and burn. A belt with more ribs than the pulley will hang over the edge, and the overhanging rib will be cut away against the pulley flange within a short distance. The rib count must match the pulley exactly.
