The first number in a size code such as 6PK1750 is the number of ribs, meaning the number of raised V shapes on the underside of the belt. Why is it so easy to count wrongly?

How wide should a belt with a given rib count be?

Can I fit a belt with one more or one fewer rib?

No. A belt with fewer ribs than the pulley will not fill the grooves and will slip and burn. A belt with more ribs than the pulley will hang over the edge, and the overhanging rib will be cut away against the pulley flange within a short distance. What if the pulley has more grooves than the belt has ribs?
