On a serpentine layout the V-ribbed belt leaves the crankshaft pulley and wraps in turn around the alternator, the water pump, the power steering pump and the air-conditioning compressor, with one or more idler pulleys and a tensioner keeping it tight. The exact order differs between engines, which is why the routing diagram matters.

Where do I find the belt routing diagram for my vehicle?

Most vehicles carry a printed routing label under the bonnet, usually on the radiator support panel or the underside of the bonnet itself. If the label is missing or unreadable, the workshop manual for that engine has the diagram. Photograph the belt in place before removing it, because a serpentine belt can often be threaded several wrong ways that still look plausible.

Why do some engines have two V-ribbed belts?

Some engines separate the air-conditioning compressor onto its own short belt so that a failure of the air-conditioning system does not stop the alternator and water pump. Diesel engines and larger commercial vehicles often do this. When ordering, check whether the vehicle uses a single serpentine belt or a main belt plus a separate air-conditioning belt, because the part numbers are different.

Can I drive with the air-conditioning belt removed?

If the vehicle uses a separate air-conditioning belt, then removing it leaves the main belt driving everything essential, and the vehicle can be driven with the air-conditioning not working. If the vehicle uses one single serpentine belt, removing it also stops the alternator and usually the water pump, so the vehicle must not be driven. Confirm which layout the engine uses before deciding.
