(V-Ribbed Belts · Basics)
A V-ribbed belt is built from three layers: the ribbed underside that grips the pulley grooves, the tension cords buried in the middle that carry the pulling load, and the flat backside that runs against idler pulleys. Knowing which layer is which makes it far easier to judge wear and to pick the right replacement.V-Ribbed Belt
The drawing above shows a 6PK belt cut across its width. The six V-shaped ribs sit at the bottom, spaced 3.56 millimetres apart, which is the standard PK rib pitch. The row of grey dots through the middle is the tension cord layer. The flat surface along the top is the backside. Total thickness for a PK belt is about 4.3 millimetres and total width is about 21.4 millimetres for six ribs.
A cross-section of a 6PK V-ribbed belt cut across its width, showing three layers: a flat grey backside along the top, a row of grey dots through the middle representing the tension cord layer, and six V-shaped ribs at the bottom spaced at the standard 3.56 mm PK rib pitch. Dimensions mark the overall thickness at about 4.3 mm and the total width at about 21.4 mm for six ribs. Three numbered points: (1) the backside, which runs against idler pulleys; (2) the tension cords, covered in a red box below — usually polyester or aramid strands running the full length of the belt, carrying almost all of the pulling force, with the surrounding rubber only there to grip the pulley and protect the cords, which is why a belt that looks fine on the outside can already be failing at the cords; (3) the ribs, which sit at the bottom and grip the matching grooves in the pulley.
What do the tension cords actually do?
The tension cords carry almost all of the pulling force. They are usually polyester or aramid strands running the full length of the belt. The rubber around them only grips the pulley and protects the cords. This is why a belt that looks fine on the outside can still be unsafe if the cords are damaged, and why a belt should never be levered onto a pulley with a screwdriver.
Why is the backside of the belt flat?
On a serpentine layout the belt has to bend both ways. The ribbed side wraps the driven pulleys, and the flat backside wraps the idler and tensioner pulleys, which are smooth. Because the backside runs against a smooth pulley it must stay flat and clean. A backside that has become shiny, glazed or grooved usually means an idler pulley bearing is failing.
What is the 40 degree rib angle for?
The 40 degree V shape wedges the belt into the matching groove in the pulley. As tension rises the wedge action increases the grip without needing the belt to be extremely tight. Pulley grooves are cut to the same 40 degree angle, which is why a belt of the wrong profile will never seat correctly even if the width happens to look similar.
What are the tension cords made of and why do they matter?

Usually polyester or aramid cord running the length of the belt, and they carry essentially all of the tensile load — the rubber only grips the pulley. That is why a belt that has been levered on over a pulley flange is scrap even if it looks fine: a single broken cord under the surface will let the belt stretch unevenly and then fail.
What does the backing of the belt do?
Belt
It runs against the flat idler pulleys in a serpentine layout, so it needs its own wear resistance and a controlled friction level. A belt with a cracked or glazed backing will slip on a flat idler even when the ribs are perfect. On a layout with no flat idlers the backing does very little, which is why belt condition must be judged on the ribs first.
Why are the ribs V-shaped rather than flat?
Because a V wedges into the matching groove and multiplies the grip for a given tension. A flat belt of the same width would need several times the tension to transmit the same power, which would destroy the alternator and pump bearings. The V shape is what lets a narrow belt drive a whole engine bay at a tension the bearings can survive.
Can a damaged rib be ignored if the belt is otherwise good?
No. A missing chunk out of one rib removes grip on that rib for the whole length of the belt and concentrates load on the others, and the gap also lets the belt walk sideways in the pulley. A belt with a chunk missing, a rib separating, or cracks across more than three ribs in a 25 mm span is replaced.
