What a Timing Belt Does in Your Engine

A timing belt is a toothed rubber belt that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft so that the valves open and close at exactly the right moment in each cylinder cycle. It sits behind a cover at one end of the engine and, unlike the V-ribbed belt, it is never visible during a normal bonnet check.

Why must the camshaft and crankshaft stay in step?

The crankshaft moves the pistons up and down. The camshaft opens and closes the valves. If the two drift apart by even one tooth, a valve is open when a piston is near the top of its travel. The engine then runs badly, loses power, or in the worst case the piston strikes the valve. The timing belt is the only thing holding that relationship.

How is a timing belt different from a V-ribbed belt?

A timing belt has teeth running across its width, is hidden behind a cover, and transmits engine timing. A V-ribbed belt has ribs running along its length, is visible at the front of the engine, and drives accessories such as the alternator and air-conditioning compressor. A V-ribbed belt is allowed to slip slightly; a timing belt must never slip at all.

Do all engines have a timing belt?

No. Some engines use a timing chain, which is a metal chain running in engine oil and is designed to last the life of the engine. Others use a timing belt, which is rubber and must be replaced on a schedule. A few use gears. Check which type an engine uses before quoting a replacement, because a chain engine has no belt to sell.
