An iron is a heating element, a soleplate and a thermostat, and almost everything that goes wrong with one is either the soleplate surface or what has been put through it. Our SHARP AM range covers plain and nonstick soleplates, and the choice between them matters more than the model number.

What is the difference between a plain and a nonstick soleplate?

A nonstick soleplate glides more easily and is far less likely to mark delicate fabric or pick up melted synthetic. A plain plate takes more heat without damage and can be cleaned more aggressively. Our AM-285T and AM-455T are the nonstick versions of the AM-285 and AM-455 — the T marks the coating.

What ruins a soleplate?

Melted synthetic fabric, starch build-up and anything abrasive used to clean it. Once a synthetic has melted onto a hot plate it bakes on, and scraping it off with anything metal takes the coating with it. Set the temperature for the fabric rather than turning it up to save time — that one habit accounts for most ruined soleplates.

How do I clean a soleplate?

Cold, and gently. For a plain plate a damp cloth with a mild paste will lift most marks. For nonstick, a soft damp cloth only — no scouring pad, no metal, no oven cleaner. Melted plastic is the hard case: let the plate cool completely first, because trying to scrape it while hot spreads it and burns you.

Should I buy a steam iron or a dry iron?

It depends on the water as much as the ironing. Steam works well on cotton and linen, but in a hard water area the steam holes and the chamber scale up and eventually block or spit. A dry iron with a separate spray bottle avoids that entirely and is simpler to keep working. Ask what is in stock and what the water is like where you live.

What temperature for which fabric?

Follow the dots on the garment label rather than the fabric name, because blends are common. As a rule, synthetics take the lowest setting, silk and wool the middle, cotton and linen the highest. Start low and work up — you can always add heat, but a scorch mark or a melted patch does not come out.

The iron has stopped heating. What now?

Check the socket with another appliance and check the lead where it enters the iron — that is where flexing breaks the wires, and a lead that works in one position and not another is the fault. Beyond that, an iron is a mains appliance with an exposed heating element and is not a safe thing to open at home. Take it to someone qualified or replace it.

Can I fill a steam iron with any water?

Follow what the manual says, and where it allows tap water, understand that hard water scales the chamber faster. Where scaling is a problem, boiled and cooled or distilled water slows it down. What you should never put in is anything with additives — scented water, starch or fabric conditioner block the steam holes and the blockage is not easy to clear.
