The two soleplates at the top are the whole difference: a plain plate and a nonstick-coated one. Below, each model is drawn twice — the grey bar is the plain version and the green bar is the T version. The step on the right is what the nonstick costs on that model, and it is not a fixed premium: about 10,500 kyat on the AM-200, about 16,300 on the AM-265, about 55,700 on the AM-455 and about 66,800 on the AM-475. Always compare the two prices for the model in front of you rather than assuming the T costs a little more.
What does the T at the end of the model number mean?

Is the nonstick always the same price step?

No, and this catches people out. On the AM-200 pair the step is about 10,500 kyat. On the AM-455 pair it is about 55,700, from 142,900 to 198,600. On the AM-475 pair it is about 66,800, from 151,900 to 218,700. Check the two prices side by side rather than assuming the T costs a little more.

What does a nonstick soleplate actually do for me?

It releases from synthetic fabric instead of dragging, and starch and melted fibre wipe off instead of baking on. If you iron cotton longyi and school uniforms the plain plate is fine. If you iron nylon, polyester blends or anything with a printed design, the nonstick is what stops the print lifting onto the plate.

What weight of iron should I choose?

Heavier presses creases with less effort from you. The NATIONAL dry irons state their weight directly: NI-02A is 3.5 lbs at about 66,000 kyat and NI-21A is 4.5 lbs at about 92,400. The extra pound does the work your arm would otherwise do, which matters if you iron a stack of clothes at one sitting.

Dry iron or steam iron?

A dry iron has no water tank and nothing inside to block. A steam iron pushes water through the plate to relax heavy creases in cotton and linen without you sprinkling by hand. Our PHILIPS GC-1903 range is steam and nonstick at about 131,600 kyat. If your water is hard, a dry iron will outlast a steam iron simply because there is nothing to scale up.

How much do the brands differ in price?

A lot. HANABISHI HDI-820T sits at about 53,500 kyat, MITSUMARU AP-I11 at about 79,300, PHILIPS HI-108 at about 98,400, and the top SHARP AM-475T at about 218,700 — roughly four times the entry price. The gap buys plate quality, weight and cord length rather than a different job done.

How do I make an iron last?

Let it cool fully before you put it away, and stand it on its heel rather than face down on the board. Wind the cord loosely — a tight wrap around a hot iron is the commonest cause of a cord failing where it enters the body. Wipe the plate while it is just warm, never while hot, and never with anything abrasive.
