A power strip has one cable feeding it and that cable has a limit. Everything plugged into the strip shares it. Most overload accidents come from forgetting that a strip with eight sockets does not mean eight appliances worth of capacity — it means eight places to plug into one cable.

How do I work out the limit?

Read the current rating printed on the strip and multiply by the supply voltage. On our 230 volt supply a strip rated at 10 amps gives about 2300 watts in total, and one rated 13 amps gives about 2990 watts. Add up the wattage of everything you want to plug in and keep the total comfortably below that figure.

What uses a lot and what uses very little?

Anything that makes heat uses a lot. A rice cooker, an iron, a kettle or a heater is typically several hundred to two thousand watts each, and two of those on one strip can use most of its capacity. Phone chargers, routers, lamps and laptops use very little. The problem is never the row of small things; it is the second heating appliance.

Can I plug one strip into another?

No. Daisy-chaining strips multiplies the number of sockets without adding any capacity, and the first cable in the chain carries everything. It also puts several connections in series, each of which can heat up. If you need more sockets in a place, the answer is another circuit, not another strip.

Does the cable need to be uncoiled?

Yes, on anything drawing real power. A coiled cable cannot lose its heat and a tightly wound drum carrying a heavy load can get hot enough to damage the insulation. Our strips come in 3, 5, 8 and 10 metre cables — buy the length you need rather than buying long and coiling the surplus.

What do the USB ports on a strip actually give?

Five volts, with the current shared between the ports rather than each port giving its full rating. Our strips carry two or three USB ports alongside the mains outlets. They are convenient for phones and small devices; they are not a substitute for a fast charger where a device needs one, and charging four things at once will be slower than charging one.

What are the warning signs of an overloaded strip?

A plug or socket that is warm to the touch, a smell of hot plastic, discoloured or browning around a socket, a plug that has become loose in its socket, or a strip that has started to buzz. Any of those means unplug it now and stop using it — not replace the fuse and carry on. A warm plug is the stage before a fire.

Decide on three things: how many sockets you actually need, the cable length to reach without stretching or coiling, and whether you want USB ports. Our range covers 4, 5 and 8 outlets with 2 or 3 USB ports and 3 to 10 metre cables. Buy for the sockets you will use rather than the most you can get for the price.
