The stainless range is not just JIC fittings. There is a complete DIN tube system in stainless too — the SS-5000 series — covering unions, elbows, tees, bulkheads and tube nuts in light, extra light and heavy duty. It follows the same rules as the steel DIN range, with one extra decision on top: the grade.

What shapes does the SS-5000 range cover?

The same shapes as the steel 5000 series. Unions, 90 and 45 degree elbows, run and branch tees, crosses, bulkhead unions and bulkhead elbows, plus tube nuts and adapters to BSPP, BSPT, NPT, metric and SAE ORB. If a shape exists in the steel DIN range there is usually a stainless equivalent on the shelf.

What are L, S and LL in the stainless codes?

The duty series. L is light, S is heavy and LL is extra light — a thinner-walled, lower-pressure series used where space and weight matter more than pressure. Our SS-5000L, SS-5000S and SS-5000LL are the plain union in each. They are not interchangeable, because the tube-size-to-thread mapping is different in every series.

When is stainless DIN worth the cost?

Where the tube run itself is stainless, where the machine is washed down, and where the line lives outdoors near the coast. Putting a steel fitting on a stainless tube defeats the reason the tube was specified in the first place. Inside a dry machine in a shed, the steel DIN range does the same job for a fraction of the price.

Do stainless fittings take the same pressure as steel?

Read the rating for the exact part rather than assuming. Stainless has different mechanical properties from carbon steel and the published figures are not automatically the same — sometimes higher, sometimes lower for the same size. Where the machine runs near the fitting limit, that difference matters and is worth checking.

Can I mix a stainless nut with a steel body?

Avoid it. The thread will engage, but the two metals have different expansion rates and different hardness, and in a wet environment they corrode each other. More practically, a stainless nut on a steel body is far more likely to gall and seize. Keep a joint within one material.

How do I order from this range?

Shape, series letter, tube size in millimetres, and the grade — 304 or 316. That is one more piece of information than the steel range needs, and it is the one people forget. Say all four and the counter can go straight to the part.

Is stainless harder to cut and thread?

Yes, and it punishes the wrong approach. Stainless work-hardens as you cut it, so a slow feed or a blunt tool skates on the surface, hardens it and then cannot cut at all. Use sharp tooling, a positive feed and plenty of cutting fluid, and do not let a drill or die rub without cutting.
