Flat steel is sold by the sheet, and the weight on the listing is calculated rather than guessed — which means you can check it yourself in one line of arithmetic, and you can work out what a size we do not list would weigh before you ask for it.

What sheet sizes are stocked?

Two widths dominate. 1219 x 2438 mm, which is the metric 4 by 8 foot sheet, and 1524 x 6096 mm, which is 5 by 20 foot. We also carry 1219 x 4876. Thicknesses run from 1.2 mm on chequered plate up to 30 mm on hot rolled sheet, so the weight of one piece ranges from under 30 kg to well over two tonnes.

How is the weight calculated?

Length times width times thickness in metres, times 7850 kilograms per cubic metre for steel. Check it on one of ours: 1.219 by 2.438 by 0.003 metres is 0.008916 cubic metres, times 7850 gives 69.99 kg — and the listing for that 3 mm chequered plate reads 69.96 kg. The 1524 by 6096 by 30 mm sheet works out at 2187 kg against a listed 2186.25.

Why would I want to do that calculation myself?

Three reasons. To estimate the cost of a job before you come in, since steel is sold by weight. To check that a delivery matches what was ordered. And to work out whether a lorry or a lifting point can take the load — a single 30 mm sheet at over two tonnes is not a two-man lift and not a light truck load.

What is chequered plate for?

Floors, walkways, steps, ramps and vehicle beds — anywhere people or wheels need grip on steel. The raised pattern is the anti-slip feature, and it also stiffens the sheet slightly. Our range runs 1.2 to 3 mm on the 1219 by 2438 sheet, which covers most walkway and trailer floor work.

Does the chequer pattern add to the thickness figure?

The quoted thickness is the base plate, not the top of the raised pattern. That matters when the plate has to sit flush in a frame or when you are calculating a cut list — measure the base if the fit is tight. It also means the weight includes the pattern, which is why a chequered plate weighs slightly more than a plain sheet of the same stated thickness.

Can you cut sheet to size?

Ask at the counter with the cut list and the tolerance you need. Whether it is worth cutting depends on how much of the sheet the pieces use — a nested cut list that uses most of a sheet costs little more than the sheet, while two small pieces from a full sheet means paying for the whole sheet anyway. Bring the list rather than the individual sizes.

How should sheet be stored and handled?

Flat and off the ground, with timber bearers spaced so the sheet does not sag between them. Sheet stored leaning against a wall bends permanently and will not lie flat again. For lifting, use a proper plate clamp or a sling under a spreader — a sheet lifted by one corner flexes, and a large thin sheet can cut on its own edge as it swings.
