What is radial load and what is axial load?

Radial load pushes at right angles to the shaft — the weight of a pulley hanging on it. Axial or thrust load pushes along the shaft — a helical gear trying to walk sideways. What does a cylindrical roller bearing do best?

What is a spherical roller bearing for?

Misalignment. Its outer raceway is a section of a sphere, so the shaft can sit up to about 1.5 to 2 degrees out of line and the bearing still runs evenly. When thrust and radial load act together — a machine tool spindle, a pump, a gearbox with helical gears.
